The power imposed upon one is the power that animates one’s emergence, and there appears to be no escaping this ambivalence. Indeed, there appears to be no “one” without ambivalence, which is to say that the fictive redoubling necessary to become a self rules out the possibility of strict identity. Finally, then, there is no ambivalence without loss as the verdict of sociality, one that leaves the trace of its turn at the scene of one’s emergence. (Judith Butler, The Psychic Life of Power, p. 104) Exceeding is not escaping, and the subject exceeds precisely that to which it is bound. (Ibid., p. 17) [A]gency may well consist in opposing and transforming the social terms by which it is spawned. (Ibid., p. 29) “[B]ecoming” is no simple or continuous affair, but an uneasy practice of repetition and its risks, compelled yet incomplete, wavering on the horizon of social being. (Ibid., pp. 29–30)
